Custom wall art lets you adapt an artwork to your wall dimensions, reference photos and room colors. However, photo prints and hand-painted works offer different results. This guide covers materials, design choices and order details, with a custom seascape oil painting as a practical example.

Customization does not always require a new design. You can keep an existing subject and change its dimensions or frame. Alternatively, you can supply a photograph and request changes to the background, colors or composition.

Start by identifying what needs to change:

When measuring, distinguish the image size from the finished framed size. For multiple panels, include the gaps between them. If you need help balancing artwork with nearby furniture, consult our wall art arrangement guide before confirming dimensions.

Photo prints suit buyers who want to retain the original image and produce matching copies. However, the source file, print size and production method all affect clarity. Supply the original image where possible, since compressed screenshots may lose detail when enlarged.

Hand-painted oil paintings interpret the subject through paint and brushwork. An artist can adjust the composition, background and palette within an agreed brief. However, the result will not reproduce a photograph pixel for pixel. Therefore, mark any essential features, such as facial details or vessel markings.

Compare Photo Prints and Hand-Painted Oil Paintings
